Alright, let's do this!

Ski trip

Only 20 seats are left on the bus!   After the coming week, we might not have any seats left.  Hurry up if still interested!

About ourselves

by Diana Dikovsky at 7:38 PM on Monday, Oct 13 2008

Now that most of us have registered (but not everyone), it's time we write about ourselves longer than a sentence or two.  In case you still have no idea what you can write about yourself, here's a list of questions:

  • Had you hiked before you joined the Club?  If yes, where?
  • Why did you join the Club?
  • Had you seen the Hudson River before you started hiking?
  • Had you seen Grand Central before you took a train to Cold Spring from there?
  • How does it feel to wake up at 6 a.m. on a Saturday or Sunday morning?
  • Had you seen eagles before you spotted one or more from Breakneck Ridge?
  • Had you ever climbed rocks before?
  • What do you love?
  • What do you hate?
  • Do you like school? Love it? Hate it like Alex's favorite character John?
  • Are grades important to you?
  • What are you - a future nurse?  A teacher?  A politician?  A chess world champion?  A computer genius?  Or a forest ranger?
  • Do you collect anything?
  • How often would you like to go hiking if it were up to you?
  • What's your favorite season?

Before the next hike please make sure you do the writing.  Max and Yura, our web developer and designer, have done their part.  It's time you guys do yours.   When is the next hike?  When the people who are planning to hike do their Homework.

One more thing.  Even though they say that a picture is worth a thousand words, I believe it depends on a picture or words.  What I mean is - please leave at least a few sentences about our last hike.   After all, computers can't replace communication; pictures cannot replace words.

New site kick-off

by Maxim Chernyak at 12:42 AM on Monday, Oct 6 2008

Suddenly I remember the good old times. Hmm, let's reminisce. The first Abraham Lincoln Hiking Club website was produced by someone named Venyamin Gundarev.  The guy apparently has managed to finish college and become a smarty pants engineer since then.  He also has managed to expand his repertoire with some professional climbing skills.  Incredible dude, you should all meet him sometime so he can tell you about the best hiking equipment out there.  Although, enough about him, his "Gear Guru" section is doomed anyway.  Which brings me to the next iteration.

Was it 2004? Yeah, I think it was 2004 when the wehike.net came out.  My friend Juriy used to be an insignificant Warcraft 3 freak back in the day. He barely had any HTML/CSS skills, and was trying hard.  As was I unburdened by any serious knowledge of PHP/MySQL. The 2004's wehike.net was a product of our limited knowledge and unlimited enthusiasm.  It still fascinates me how much things can change in such short periods of time.  However, now is a different time. The time to update.  The old site, as cozy as it was, and as well as it served the club, has now earned its retirement.  We're presenting the product of the Web2.0 generation; social networking infested, plagued with ajax and Ruby on Rails; the new WeHike.net.

It's surely full of bugs and glitches, so as New York City subway ads suggest - if you see something, say something!  Leave comments in the Guestbook in case you encounter something weird or simply want to comment on the website.

P.S.  Do you have web design skills? As you probably noticed, this site could use a little dress-up.  If you feel that you can make this place look beautiful, talk to Ms. Dikovsky, we could use your help!
